Weblogs and Accessibility Issues
I have been using blogs in my classes now for close to ten years and have heretofore never stopped to consider the needs of my students and and other potential users regarding accessibility issues. In retrospect I recall that I have had students who were differently-abled. Several had cognitive differences, as well as visual and hearing impairments. My blog assignments have always been text-heavy, but have also encouraged students to use video, audio, pictures and links.
I never asked them if they were able to adequately access and understand information embedded in the blogs they read and interacted with.
What a mistake!
As result of my new-found knowledge about universal accessibility I will make a conscientious effort to adapt web-based assignments to attend to WAI Standards.
As a first attempt I am adding audio to this blog with a voice message from Gabcast... Gabcast! Using Blogger as a Platform for Instruction #4
